A French journalist in Afghanistan is kidnapped by the Taliban.
In Afghanistan, French journalist Elsa and her colleague Amen are covering the story of Maina, a woman sold to a man when she was a child. Taliban leader Ahmed Zaief abducts Elsa and Amen and tries to force them to read a message to Western governments. The French president sends six Special Force to rescue Elsa who's hidden in a fortress in Pakistan. The team composed of Commander Kovax, Tic-Tac, Lucas, the sniper Elias, Victor and Marius release Elsa and Amen from their imprisonment but lose their radios. Now the group needs to cross the inhospitable land to save their lives with the Taliban chasing them.
Maina gives Elsa an interview. She reveals her face, and the fact that her family sold her as a child to Zaief. This sets the stage for all the difficulties that follow.

Emily is kidnapped, French special forces gather to rescue her with the backing of the highest reaches of the French government.

Zaief has an interview with a high-ranking religious figure; he does not quite get the blessing he had hoped for. Maina and some of her supporters are murdered, firing squad style. The Special Forces group does not intervene, since their orders are for reconnaissance only.

They find Elsa and Amen early on, and start the long and winding escort to freedom.

Forty minutes in, their expected evacuation by helicopter fails due to lack of radio contact. This seemed a bit implausible, but allowed the rest of the screenplay to proceed.

They continue with the odds against them. Sacrifices are made, and the mission is eventually successful in a technical sense.

––Scores––-

Cinematography: 10/10 Top notch; magnificent visuals.

Sound: 10/10 Great sound.

Acting: 8/10 I thought the actors performed well versus the script.

Screenplay: 7/10 Dragged a bit in the middle. A small number of the fighting tactics looked amateurishly stupid. Compared to a number of recent American action films, this is intelligent, well plotted, and engaging.
SPECIAL FORCES is basically an advertisement for the French armed forces – and a very good one at that. After a French journalist is kidnapped in Afghanistan by the Quetta Shura (Taliban) whilst doing a story on Afghan women (that never ends well), the French decide to send in their SOF. Unfortunately, although the mission goes well, extraction is a disaster and the team find themselves trapped in Pakistan and forced to hike/fight their way to safety. Cue lots of gorgeous shots of Central Asian scenery (with bits of Africa and the Alps for good measure) as the boys - all played by grizzled character actors - fight both the elements and the pursuing Taliban. With lots of help from the French military - one of the characters is even played by an ex-SOF guy, whilst the director's previous works were military documentaries - it largely feels authentic (not least because the elements are as dangerous as the enemy). The story seems predictable at first but the high mortality rate of the characters keeps things unpredictable. Similarly, although patriotic, the film never veers into jingoism. The action scenes are exciting, the scenery lovely, the actors excellent and the Afghans get more coverage than is usual in these sort of films.
There's nothing terribly surprising about Special Forces, a moderately gripping action flick about a group of commandos on a mission to rescue a pretty blonde who has been abducted by the Taliban. Nothing, that is, except that it's French.
The FA-MAS is not used as it's flexibility is not met by the Special Operations requirements. The French army is at the moment ( been so for a few years actually) undergoing try outs for a new service rifle and the ideal platform to test anything rigorously is the SF branch. In the movie you see a wide array of weapons with many permutations. All fitting NATO's standards, that's where a main problem with the FAMAS showed and hence the lack of presence… The FAMAS uses a 25 rounds non-standard NATO magazine, which means it cannot be fitted on an other weapon used by NATO forces. The FAMAS G2 on the other hand ( the Navy version) fixed that but was never adopted by the Army. What you get is a display of M4-727, MP5's, HK 416 (current contender), G36K(current contender), Beretta ARX-160(current contender), FR-2, FPK and so on. It's a very up to date line-up and realistic one.
